Aquatics Inspire Art and Tranquility

Aquatics can be inspiring – whether it's on the silver screen or in the humble public loo.

The dictionary definition of 'aquatics' is all things growing in, happening in or connected with water. 'Water, water everywhere...' is a line from one of the most famous poems in literary history:

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Water is a crucial to our survival, which goes some way in explaining our primal connection to expanses of water. The ocean inspires art, poetry and emotion. Aquatics in the form of aquariums can change the mood of a room instantly, inspiring tranquility and peace. Which explains why aquatics can feature in every aspect of life from the humble public loo to a glitzy Hollywood movie.

Aquatics – Flushed with Fish

Toilet water isn't the only kind of aquatics in a public toilets in Portadown. The town features an aquatics feature in the toilet block in the form of an impressive tropical fish tank. The aquarium features a range of aquatic species from all over the world such as Tetras and Rosy Barb. The exotic fish are said to be more convenient to keep than plants. The aquatics have triggered a massive response from visitors to the loos – a mixture of 'delight, shock and amazement'. The aquatics features was said to make the toilets 'more tranquil'.

The Life Aquatic

For those who would rather experience aquatics on a grander scale, the movie The Life Aquatic inspired by the life of Steve Zissou might be more up their street. Written by Wes Anderson, the Hollywood blockbuster starred major movie stars Billy Murray, Willem Dafoe and Owen Wilson. The film was inspired by the famous oceanographer and documentary maker Steve Zissou, who was obsessed with aquatics. The plot follows the king of aquatics' obsessive hunt for the elusive Jaguar Shark. The off-beat comedy features lost sons, murderous raids by pirates, bizarre romances and a reporter played by Cate Blanchett - who is a fan of the aquatics legend and follows him obsessively around his boat. The film's special effects are what makes it really stand out as the aquatics are at once stunningly beautiful and bizarre.

It's easy to see why Zissou's obsession with aquatics inspired Hollywood. Aquatics touches all our lives – whether it's an aquarium in your home, a fish tank in the public toilets, or the theme of great poetry. Water, and what lives in it, taps into extreme feelings from fear to inner peace, from the anxiety of movies like Jaws or the tranquility of aquariums in dentist waiting rooms.
